The Four Burners Theory: What law firms have to give up to grow
The Four Burners Theory highlights a constraint that law firms often overlook: leadership attention, time and organisational capacity are finite. Firms may want stronger client relationships, greater profitability, better talent, new practices, geographic expansion and stronger systems, but treating every objective as an equal priority can leave the institution constantly busy without becoming strategically stronger. Growth itself adds complexity, making governance, succession, technology and institutional systems increasingly important. The real challenge is not deciding what matters, but recognising what must receive less attention when something else is prioritised. Sustainable growth therefore requires law firms to make deliberate trade-offs, including knowing when to consolidate, when to wait and, at times, when to say no to an attractive opportunity.
