Sumit Attri speaks with 𝐘𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐖𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 about how strategic foresight, adaptability, and deep sectoral insights powered by innovation and technology are redefining what it means to be a modern business lawyer.

Sumit Attri is an Advocate-on-Record with the Supreme Court of India and Head of Legal at M3M India Private Limited. His practice spans dispute resolution, constitutional and corporate disputes, infrastructure and insolvency matters, white-collar crime, arbitration, as well as advisory and legal strategy.

YW: Global legal ecosystems often reward not just technical accuracy, but interpretive clarity, anticipation and diplomacy. How has this exposure shaped your own instincts as a lawyer and have there been mental frameworks that you have adopted into regular practice or strategy?

SUMIT: The Indian legal system post-independence started to develop quite late as compared to many foreign legal jurisdictions. This crucial fact always created a need for reliance on the developed foreign laws and their interpretation as done by foreign courts especially countries like UK which has greatly influenced the Indian legal system. As a budding lawyer I used to refer foreign legal journals and jurisprudence when there was no direct precedence and better examples available in India. Many times this reference provided greater clarity, interpretation and solutions to legal issues which were not then decided by Indian courts. I have utilised my exposure to global legal ecosystems by providing better representation on behalf of my client before the court of law, arbitral tribunals and statutory authorities. The law as developed and interpreted globally can be a guide to provide answers to many legal queries and the same has been adopted by me in my law practice including formulating arguments and legal strategy and advice.

YW: For senior advisors operating at the intersection of global business and local law, the role is often as much about influence as about expertise. How have you come to define that influence within your practice?

SUMIT: In the modern times there has been an evolving relationship between global business and local laws. Global businesses are exposed to various legal jurisdictions and therefore local laws influence business decisions. As a lawyer I have always advised to keep the impact of such influence in mind while negotiating any contract between the parties. A well drafted contract comes to your rescue in case of breaches/disputes with the opposite party. Another example of influence of local laws on business is being compliant with the local regulations. I always advice the business organisation to be regulatory compliant which greatly influences the future business prospects. I have experienced that when disputes arises, the law provides business to make informed decisions on resolving the disputes either by negotiations/conciliation or by contesting the matter on merits. Corporate governance and regulatory compliance continue to have a rapid influence on the business decisions and operations.
