YW: In the early days of building your firm, how did you go about defining your focus areas? How have those priorities shifted or deepened over time?
GURCARAN: When I started the firm, my focus was on building strong relationships rather than making a formal business plan. We prioritised trust, consistent value, and quality over short-term volume, which naturally led to long-term clients and steady referrals. Our initial practice focus was clear: General Corporate and M&A. These are areas I knew well and could deliver on with confidence.
We chose depth over breadth. As the firm matured and our systems stabilised, we began expanding into Capital Markets, a strategic and aligned extension of our core work.
Growth for us is intentional, not rushed. Our vision remains the same: to be known for clarity, excellence, and trust. Not size but the quality and integrity of our work.
YW: Now that you lead your own practice, what feels meaningfully different in how you approach firm decisions and direction compared to earlier roles?
GURCARAN: The shift to leading a boutique practice has been deeply transformational. Internally, the role is no longer limited to lawyering. I am responsible for hiring, culture, client development, systems, and delivery. Every decision has a visible impact, which brings greater ownership and sharper focus. There is no fallback or hidden team; what you build is what you run.
Externally, client relationships are more personal and involved. We are often the first call when clients face ambiguity, change, or complex decisions. Our work does not end with sending advice. Clients trust us because we operate with context, accountability, and care.
We are not observers.
We are true partners throughout.
